Controlled Fire Exposure for EV Battery Cells and Small Test Articles
The DERUI DR-D211 EV battery cell fire exposure tester applies a controlled gas flame to a secured test article so R&D teams can observe ignition, casing response, venting, burning and fragment behavior under a defined laboratory procedure.
What the DR-D211 Can—and Cannot—Evaluate
The system is suited to comparative external-flame exposure of cells, steel-shell battery specimens and small assemblies within its size and mass limits. It can help characterize visible fire response, but it is not automatically a calorimeter, gas-analysis system, full pack fuel-fire bench or certification laboratory.
Cell Design Screening
Compare casing, vent and protective-design behavior under the same burner setup and observation procedure.
Materials and Enclosure R&D
Observe whether housings, shields and nearby materials ignite, deform, detach or permit fragment release.
Failure Documentation
Record flame time, visible events, surface temperatures and video when the configured instrumentation supports them.

Match the Equipment to a Specific Fire Procedure
UL 9540A
UL 9540A evaluates thermal-runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems through cell, module, unit and installation-level work. The DR-D211 may support limited R&D activities only if a reviewed procedure and instrumentation match; it is not a complete UL 9540A laboratory by itself.
UNECE Regulation No. 100
UNECE R100 external-fire resistance applies to a REESS/vehicle or representative subsystem with defined fuel-pan exposure. The DR-D211 size and gas-burner arrangement are not automatically equivalent to that pack-level procedure.
ASTM E3189
Remove this claim entirely. ASTM E3189 covers separation of ignitable-liquid residues from fire-debris samples for analysis, not EV battery fire-resistance testing.
China and Product Standards
GB/T 31485 is an older traction-battery safety document. Confirm the current mandatory/product standard, edition, specimen level and exact fire procedure before claiming compliance.
This Equipment Requires a Dedicated Fire-Test Environment
Minimum Project Review
- Remote operation and restricted test zone
- Engineered combustion exhaust and makeup air
- Gas detection and emergency fuel shutoff
- Fire-rated room and noncombustible surfaces
- Suppression and emergency response selected by site risk assessment
- Safe post-test cooling, quarantine and disposal
Open Structure Changes the Risk
The source describes open front and rear construction. It must not be marketed as a sealed chamber that “contains flames safely.” Heat, smoke, toxic/corrosive gases, ejecta and burning electrolyte can leave the test area. The facility EHS/fire engineer must approve the installation.
Instrumentation Is Configuration-Dependent
The old page promises pressure, gas-emission sensing, automatic suppression, data acquisition and report generation, but these are absent from the technical table. Treat them as optional until documented.
Information Needed Before Configuration
Define the Specimen
Chemistry, format, dimensions, mass, energy, state of charge, enclosure and expected failure modes.
Define the Exposure
Standard/method, fuel, flame dimensions and temperature, distance, duration, airflow and termination criteria.
Define the Measurements
Thermocouples, voltage, video, pressure, gas sampling, heat-release measurement and event timing.
EV Battery Cell Fire Tester FAQs
What does the DR-D211 test?
It applies a controlled gas flame to a cell or small battery specimen so visible fire response and selected measurements can be documented under a defined procedure.
Is it a thermal-runaway propagation tester?
Not by itself. Propagation testing requires a defined initiation method, neighboring cells/modules, instrumentation and acceptance criteria.
Does it comply with UL 9540A?
The complete UL 9540A method is broader than this device. A qualified laboratory must determine whether this equipment supports any particular activity in its test plan.
Can it run UNECE R100 pack fire exposure?
Not based on the supplied specifications. UNECE R100 uses a REESS/vehicle-scale fuel-pan procedure that differs in specimen size and flame arrangement.
Why was ASTM E3189 removed?
ASTM E3189 concerns fire-debris sample preparation for ignitable-liquid residue analysis; it is unrelated to battery fire-resistance equipment.
What specimen size is supported?
The stated maximum envelope is 400 × 400 × 200 mm and maximum mass is 20 kg. Fixture, clearance and risk limits may reduce usable capacity.
Does the tester include gas analysis and suppression?
They are not confirmed in the supplied parameter table. Add them only if included in the approved configuration and facility safety design.
What should I provide for quotation?
Send chemistry, dimensions, mass, energy, SOC, procedure, burner/exposure details, measurements, exhaust and facility safety requirements.
Review the Fire Procedure and Facility Together
Send DERUI the specimen, energy and state of charge, applicable method, flame exposure, instrumentation and site fire-safety plan. We will confirm whether DR-D211 fits the test and which options are required.
