What This Phone IP Test Chamber Actually Tests

The second character in an IP code identifies protection against water ingress. This chamber reproduces the spraying and splashing conditions associated with IPX3 and IPX4. It helps engineers evaluate enclosure joints, display bonding, buttons, speaker openings, charging ports, camera windows, SIM trays and other potential ingress paths.

Important: this oscillating-tube chamber does not perform dust testing, water-jet testing or immersion testing. IP5X/IP6X, IPX5/IPX6, IPX7/IPX8 and IPX9 require different equipment or dedicated modules.

How the Oscillating Water Test Works

1. Program the Motion

The controller coordinates tube movement, exposure time and specimen-table rotation according to the selected procedure.

2. Condition the Water Supply

The storage tank, filter and replenishment system supply water to the pump. Final water quality and temperature must follow the laboratory procedure.

3. Control Flow and Distribution

The pump delivers water through the flow-measurement system to the oscillating tube. Nozzle size, spacing, tube radius and flow must match the required setup.

4. Inspect the Device

After exposure, the operator follows the defined handling, opening and functional-check procedure to assess whether water caused a harmful effect.

For dust ingress ratings, use a separate IP5X/IP6X dust ingress test chamber. A product marked IP68, for example, must satisfy both the applicable dust and water requirements; the “6” and “8” come from separate tests.

Standards and Compliance Scope

The primary international reference is IEC 60529, Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code). The current IEC consolidated publication is IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013. A project may also reference an adopted national version or a customer procedure.

  • Confirm the exact standard edition and test clause before equipment configuration.
  • Do not mix automotive high-pressure wash requirements with ordinary phone IPX3/IPX4 testing.
  • Calibrate or verify flow, timing, motion and relevant geometric conditions as required by the quality system.
  • Define the post-test acceptance criteria before exposure, including function, safety and harmful water ingress.

A recirculating system can reduce consumption, but filtration, cleanliness, temperature and any standard-specific water requirements must remain controlled. Replace water according to the laboratory procedure.

How is the correct oscillating-tube size selected?

The radius is selected from the specimen and fixture envelope while maintaining the geometry required by the chosen method. Larger fixtures may require a larger tube or a different spray arrangement.
