Rubber and Polymer
Ozone Ageing Test ChamberThe chamber assesses how rubber and polymer components resist ozone attack while held under tension — vulcanized rubber, thermoplastic elastomers and cable sheathing being the usual specimens. The unit reviewed is a combined ozone and humidity chamber: it operates from 10 °C to 70 °C, with an adjustable ozone concentration of 20–2000 pphm and a humidity range of 30–80 %. |
What the Two Tests Are Used For
Climate testing and ozone ageing testing answer two different reliability questions, and the same laboratory often runs both side by side.
Temperature and humidity testing covers the widest range of products: it reproduces the heat, cold and moisture a unit meets in storage, transport and service, and is used to expose weak points in enclosures, seals, coatings, adhesives and printed circuit boards.
Ozone ageing testing targets elastomers specifically. Ozone attacks stretched rubber even at low concentrations and produces surface cracking, which is why cable sheathing, window seals, hoses and vibration mounts are routinely checked against an ozone ageing specification.
