The order covers a DR-IPX56-225 sand dust test chamber and a DR-H501-IPX7 water immersion test chamber — one for solid-particle ingress, one for temporary immersion. Both units left the Dongguan production base fully crated, braced and strapped for the sea freight leg.

Sand dust test chamber

A dust chamber generates a controlled, dust-laden airflow inside a closed workspace so that an enclosure can be examined for solid-particle ingress. The method and acceptance criteria follow the dust protection levels defined in IEC 60529 — IP5X for dust protected and IP6X for dust tight — with an optional under-pressure mode where the project needs to reproduce a pressure difference across the enclosure. The DR-IPX56-225 in this order belongs to the DR-IPX56 series of sand dust chambers.

Water immersion test chamber

The second unit handles the liquid side of the same specification. An immersion chamber holds the specimen under water at a defined depth for a defined duration to verify that the enclosure keeps water out at the IPX7 level of IEC 60529 — temporary immersion, with the 30-minute duration set by the standard. In practice, the specimen's height and reference point decide how the immersion condition is arranged, so the set-up is confirmed against the actual enclosure instead of being applied as a blanket rule.

Why these two tests are ordered as a pair

Dust protection and water protection sit in different digits of the same IP code. Outdoor, portable and vehicle-mounted electronics are normally specified with both, because the same enclosure has to survive a dusty site and a wet one.

Protection against water: IPX7 temporary immersion, and the spray or jet levels above it.

The two are also tested on completely different equipment. Dust testing needs a closed chamber with a circulating dust-laden airflow; immersion testing needs a water vessel with controlled depth and duration. That is why the two units were ordered together rather than combined into one machine — a single chamber does not realistically cover both digits.

Both chambers were packed in fully enclosed plywood cases, reinforced and strapped for long-distance sea transport, then loaded at the Derui production base in Dongguan, Guangdong. Photos from the loading area are shown below.

Q. Do the dust chamber and the immersion chamber do the same job?

No. They target two different digits of the IP code and cannot substitute for each other. Dust testing evaluates resistance to solid particles in a dry, dust-laden airflow. Immersion testing evaluates resistance to water when the enclosure is submerged. A unit that passes one tells you nothing about the other.

Q. Which protection levels does each unit address?

The sand dust chamber addresses the IP5X (dust protected) and IP6X (dust tight) levels. The immersion chamber addresses IPX7 temporary immersion conditions. Spray and jet levels such as IPX5, IPX6 and IPX9K are covered by separate rain spray and high-pressure jet equipment.
