Xenon-arc weathering standard comparison

ASTM G155 and ISO 4892-2 Are Related—but Not Interchangeable

Both documents use optically filtered xenon-arc light to reproduce weathering effects associated with daylight. Both can include control of irradiance, specimen temperature and moisture. That shared technology does not create one universal exposure cycle or make a report issued under one document automatically acceptable under the other.

ASTM G155-25 is a practice for operating xenon-arc lamp and water apparatus for exposure of materials. ASTM states that it must be used with an application-specific practice, method or specification that defines the exposure conditions and how property changes will be evaluated.

ISO 4892-2:2013 specifies xenon-arc exposure methods for plastics in the presence of moisture to reproduce daylight or window-glass daylight effects. Its 2021 amendment addresses classification of daylight filters.

Selection rule: follow the exact standard, edition, exposure method and acceptance criteria named in the product specification, OEM document, purchase contract or approved laboratory plan. Do not select a program only because it is stored in the chamber controller.

Scope before settings

What Each Document Controls

The most important difference is not a single temperature or irradiance value. It is the role each document plays in the testing system. This determines what additional information is needed before a defensible program can be created.

Decision point ASTM G155-25 ISO 4892-2:2013 What the laboratory must confirm
Document role Practice for operating xenon-arc lamp and water apparatus. Methods for exposing plastics to xenon-arc light in the presence of moisture. The governing product, OEM or customer document that completes the test requirements.
Intended exposure Effects associated with direct sunlight or sunlight through window glass, with moisture when required. Effects associated with daylight or daylight filtered through window glass, including temperature, humidity and/or wetting. Whether the end use is outdoor, behind glass or another defined service condition.
Material scope Exposure of materials; specimen preparation and evaluation come from material-specific methods or specifications. Specifically written for plastics; other material standards may reference related xenon-arc procedures. The material-specific document and property evaluation method.
Exposure conditions A range of procedures may be available, but G155 does not choose the best conditions for a material. The applicable method and related product requirement define the selected conditions. Filter, irradiance basis, temperature reference, moisture sequence, duration and tolerances.

Results depend on the selected method, specimen preparation and evaluation criteria. Whether cross-apparatus or cross-standard comparison has been established for the material.
Edition status G155-25 is listed by ASTM as active. The 2013 edition remains published and was confirmed in 2023; ISO lists it as to be revised. Amendment 1:2021 concerns daylight filters. The exact edition contractually required at the date of testing.

Technically similar does not mean identical

ASTM identifies G155 as technically similar to several ISO xenon-arc documents, including ISO 4892-2. Similarity supports technical comparison, but it does not authorize a laboratory or supplier to rename one completed exposure as the other.

Do not publish a universal parameter table

A single table of “ASTM values” and “ISO values” can mislead buyers because final conditions are selected through application-specific requirements. Quote the approved procedure instead of presenting one common cycle as mandatory for every material.

Complete exposure definition

Nine Variables That Decide Whether Results Can Be Compared

Matching the number of test hours is not enough. The laboratory must compare the complete exposure and evaluation system before treating two datasets as equivalent or combining them in one qualification decision.

01 · FILTER

Optical filter system

Identify the filter designation, intended daylight condition, installed configuration, spectral documentation and replacement status. Filter selection changes the radiation reaching the specimen.

02 · IRRADIANCE

Control point and setpoint

Record the specified wavelength or band, setpoint, tolerance, sensor location and calibration status. Values expressed on different measurement bases cannot be compared directly.

03 · TEMPERATURE

Temperature reference

Distinguish black-panel or black-standard temperature from chamber air temperature. Record the sensor type, setpoint, tolerance and measurement position named by the procedure.

04 · MOISTURE

Humidity and wetting

Define whether the exposure uses controlled humidity, specimen spray, dark wetting or another sequence. Record water-quality and delivery requirements where the method specifies them.

05 · SEQUENCE

Light and dark phases

Capture the order, duration and transition rules for every phase. A controller label such as “Cycle 1” is not enough unless it maps to the approved document and edition.

06 · SPECIMEN

Mounting and exposed area

Record dimensions, backing, holder, orientation, masking, repositioning and exposed surface. Unequal mounting can change temperature, water contact and received radiation.

07 · CONTROLS

Reference materials

Where the procedure or quality plan calls for controls, expose suitable reference materials with the specimens and document their expected and observed performance.

08 · ENDPOINT

Time or radiant exposure

State the approved endpoint and interruption rules. There is no universal conversion from xenon-arc hours to years of outdoor service for every material and climate.

09 · EVALUATION

Property change and acceptance

Define color, gloss, tensile, cracking or other measurements, conditioning before evaluation, measurement intervals and the pass/fail threshold.

Cross-laboratory caution: identical controller setpoints do not by themselves establish reproducibility between different apparatus. Compare apparatus configuration, calibration, specimen plane conditions, control-material behavior and the complete report before drawing conclusions.
Capability must match the program

How to Select a Chamber for ASTM G155 and ISO 4892-2 Work

A brochure statement that lists both standards is only a starting point. Ask the supplier to map the required procedure to the offered model, installed options and documented operating envelope. The final review should cover the specimens and the laboratory installation—not only the controller range.

Build the Test Plan Before Starting the Lamp

A useful plan connects the governing document to apparatus settings, specimen preparation, exposure control, evaluation and report acceptance. This prevents a technically completed exposure from being rejected because the wrong edition, filter, cycle or result format was used.

For multi-market projects, create a separate requirement row for every customer or product specification. Combine programs only when the responsible technical authority has confirmed that the conditions and acceptance criteria are the same.

Do not promise a service-life claim from exposure hours alone. If outdoor correlation is required, define the material, climate, orientation, property change and correlation method separately.

Questions to settle before testing

  • Does the buyer require ASTM G155 itself or another method that uses G155 apparatus?
  • Which ISO edition and amendment must be cited?
  • Is the intended exposure direct daylight or behind glass?
  • Are results judged by time, radiant exposure or a property-change endpoint?
  • Can the same procedure satisfy every destination or customer?

Common reasons a report is challenged

  • Only the standard number is listed; the exposure procedure is missing.
  • The filter designation or irradiance measurement basis is unclear.
  • Black-panel, black-standard and chamber-air temperatures are confused.
  • Spray, humidity, dark phases or interruptions are not documented.
  • Specimen mounting and evaluation criteria differ between laboratories.
  • One standard is claimed as an automatic substitute for the other.
Buyer and laboratory questions

ASTM G155 vs ISO 4892-2 FAQs

These answers define the decision boundary. The purchased standards and governing customer documents remain the authority for the actual exposure.

01Is ASTM G155 the same as ISO 4892-2?

No. They use related xenon-arc weathering technology, but have different document roles and must be implemented through the applicable exposure and evaluation requirements. Do not rename a report from one standard as the other without explicit authorization.

02Does ASTM G155 define one universal cycle?

No. ASTM G155 provides apparatus-operating principles and exposure procedures, while the application-specific method, product specification or approved plan determines which conditions are appropriate for the material.

03Can one xenon chamber run both standards?

Potentially. Verify each required filter, irradiance basis, temperature reference, moisture sequence, specimen arrangement, program tolerance and reporting field against the exact model and installed options. A standards list in a brochure is not sufficient evidence.

04Which standard should a global exporter choose?

Use the requirement cited by the product standard, OEM, buyer or contract. Geography alone is not a reliable rule. When customers cite different procedures, maintain a requirement matrix and run separate programs unless equivalence is formally accepted.

05Can xenon-arc test hours be converted to years outdoors?

There is no universal conversion factor for all materials, properties and climates. Laboratory exposure supports controlled comparisons; service-life correlation requires material- and environment-specific evidence.

06Is ASTM G155 intended for corrosion testing of bare metals?

No. ASTM states that G155 is not intended for corrosion testing of bare metals. Select the applicable corrosion method and chamber for that objective.
